Strategic Programme on Preservation and Conservation (PAC)

The IFLA Strategic Programme on Preservation and Conservation (PAC) has one major goal: to ensure that library and archive materials, published and unpublished, in all formats, will be preserved in accessible form for as long as possible according to the following principles:

  • preservation is essential to the survival and development of culture and scholarship;
  • international cooperation is a key principle;
  • each country must accept responsibility for the preservation of its own publications.

Our key resource towards achieving this goal is IFLA's sixteen Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Centres, hosted by libraries around the globe.

How do the PAC Centres work?

Each centre is independent and acts according to the priorities identified in its geographical and expertise area. They comply with the objectives of PAC Strategic Programme and maintain cooperation with other Centres through various activities (publications, seminars, conferences, etc.).

Learn more about the PAC Centres and explore Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) concerning their areas of expertise here: IFLA Preservation and Conservation: Frequently Asked Questions

How do the Centres work with IFLA's Professional Units?

IFLA's cultural heritage Professional Units are in regular communication with the PAC Centres through the Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee. This allows for collaboration opportunities to be identified and joint projects to be planned.
