Call for papers WLIC 2015 School Libraries Section

School Libraries Section and Health and Biosciences Libraries Section (Division I)

Well-being: School libraries and health libraries working for access, development and transformation
This 2-hour Open Session is jointly sponsored by the School Libraries section and the Health and Biosciences Libraries section.
The concept of well-being informs the work of the school librarian and the health/medical librarian and is key to public health policy and health promotion. Both health librarians and school librarians serve their clientele by gathering and disseminating information about health and by collaborating with subject experts to educate their clientele. In both environments, the capacity to frame a question and find and appraise evidence to answer this question is central to knowledge development in the health area, using approaches such as ‘inquiry-based learning’ and ‘problem-based learning.’
Topics of interest:
The School Libraries section and the Health and Biosciences Libraries section invite submission of proposals for papers about the role of libraries in public health policy and health promotion. The papers will be presented at a two-hour session in Capetown; the language of the session will be English.

Proposals may address one of the topics suggested below, but are not limited to these topics:

  • Responding to the information needs of special populations, e.g., refugee/immigrant groups, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) persons,  OVCY (orphans and vulnerable children and youth), people with disabilities, teen mothers.
  • Collaboration for health-related library instruction
  • Development of a health information network
  • Initiatives of governments and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) for health promotion through libraries
  • Using data to inform the library’s health promotion efforts
  • Development of a health promotion plan and strategies for action

Global Action on School Library Guidelines: Development and Implementation

Action on School Library Guidelines

This session celebrates the revision of the IFLA School Library Guidelines and the launch of a new book, Global Action on School Library Guidelines (deGruyter Saur, 2015). Innovative school library‐related initiatives from around the world illuminate diverse approaches to improving school library services, through the development and implementation of guidelines and standards.

Topics of interest:
The School Libraries Section invites submission of proposals for papers (including case studies) about school library guidelines initiatives. The papers will be presented at a two-hour session in Capetown; the language of the session will be English.

Proposals might address one of the topics suggested, but are not limited to these topics:

  • Development of school library guidelines at the national, regional or local level
  • Collaboration to incorporate school library guidelines in legislation or regulation
  • Development of an implementation program for school library guidelines
  • Government initiatives for the development of school library guidelines
  • Using data to inform efforts to create or revise school library guidelines
  • Communicating with stakeholders and/or decision-makers about school library guidelines
  • Using school library guidelines for the development and/or evaluation of school libraries
