In a time of crisis, libraries can make a difference!

In a world severely marked by crisis, libraries have the power to make a big difference as enterprises of hope, growth and freedom. While striving with many difficulties to maintain and develop their services, for libraries the international voice of IFLA is more crucial than ever. Only by joining together our efforts in strategy, advocacy and best practices in the international arena will it be possible to strengthen the essential role of libraries in developing knowledge, nurturing cultural diversity and fostering human creativity, with no boundaries.

Serving on the IFLA Governing Board seems to me a relevant way to contribute to these aims, bringing in my professional experience and knowledge of the field, as well as my experience of 24 years of continuous collaboration with IFLA, in various committees and working groups.

I firmly believe in the high value of IFLA’s knowledge and organizational assets built up through many decades. And I am ready to commit my energy and expertise to make the most of such value to expand IFLA’s visibility, relevance and power of influence in our challenging time.

Being a librarian since the 80s, most of my professional life has been devoted to systems of knowledge organization, bibliographic control and the management of library technology, in both a special and a national library environment. While my technical and academic interests are still in these fields, my career evolved to a more global perspective, as manager of the National Library of Portugal, since 2006.

IFLA has played an important part in my professional growth throughout my career. If elected to the Governing Board I will be honored to contribute back, helping IFLA to further its action as the prime international forum for all libraries and librarians.

Maria Inês Cordeiro
