Public Libraries Section Annual Report

The reporting year was a busy one for the active and engaged Public Libraries Standing Committee.

We continued to grow our key initiative, the IFLA/Systematic Public Library of the Year Award, which in 2018 attracted 35 entries. Members of our SC had been fortunate enough to visit the winning library, KopGroep Biblioteken, during our mid-term meeting in the Netherlands during March 2018.

We were also able to spend time at IFLA Headquarters which gave us an insight into the work the organisation undertakes on our behalf.

The SC contributed to IFLA’s continuing discussion on the Global Vision through representation at the workshop in Barcelona and also through a virtual discussion. We were agreed that we needed to better advocate for the sector and highlight the role that public libraries have to play in their communities. We were agreed that the sectors main priorities were:

  • We must update our traditional roles in the digital age
  • We need to understand community needs better and design services for impact
  • We need to ensure stakeholders understand our value and impact

The Standing Committee continued to work in partnership with other IFLA Units to deliver strong conference programs  and other initatives. Public Libraries have much in common with many other IFLA Professional Groups and a collaborate approach is beneficial to everyone.

We were also delighted to be runners up in the 2018 Dynamic Unit Award announced at the WLIC in Kuala Lumpur – demonstration of our passion,  energy and commitment. It was a great year!

I would encourage you to read the longer version of our  2018 Annual Report
